Well… the headline of this article isn’t, strictly speaking, true – I’ve always been a marketing sceptic. But my expanded knowledge of UX leaves me in no doubt that I am justified in my views.

I’ve come to believe that there’s a fundamental tension marketers face, between persuading (forcing) users to do what we want and letting users do what they’d prefer.

To overcome this, we marketers perform all kinds of embarrassing mental gymnastics and contortionisms of logic.

We’re not locking users in pop-up hell – we’re helping them sign up for more valuable content than the blog post they came to read would’ve provided.”

The WhatUsersDo marketing team and I decided to take this topic apart, in our first ever WhatMarketersDo podcast. Enjoy!
